TSA’s “Families on the Fly” Program Launches: Easier Airport Security for Parents Traveling with Kids

Traveling through airport security with children can be one of the most stressful parts of flying. Between folding strollers, unpacking snacks, and trying to keep toddlers calm in long lines, parents often face a chaotic checkpoint experience.

Now, there’s good news for families flying through U.S. airports. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has launched a new initiative called “Families on the Fly”—a dedicated security lane program designed to make flying with kids smoother and less stressful.

Where the TSA Family Lanes Are Available Now

The program officially debuted at two major U.S. airports:

  • Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT): The first U.S. airport to open a designated TSA family security lane.

  • Orlando International Airport (MCO): Also launched in July 2025, a key location for families headed to Disney and other Florida attractions.

  • Charleston International Airport (CHS) — Family lane launched August 12, 2025.

These special lanes are designed specifically for travelers with children under age 12, giving families more space, time, and support as they go through security.

More Airports Adding TSA Family Security Lanes Soon

TSA has confirmed that the Families on the Fly program will expand to several additional airports in the coming months, including:

  • John Wayne Airport (SNA) – Orange County, CA

  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) – Honolulu, HI

  • Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) – Jacksonville, FL

  • Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD) – Warwick, RI

  • Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) – San Juan, Puerto Rico

  • Tampa International Airport (TPA) – Tampa, FL

As the rollout continues, the TSA plans to introduce family screening lanes in more high-traffic airports known for serving family travelers.

Why the “Families on the Fly” Lane Makes a Difference

This new TSA family lane program isn’t just about convenience—it’s about improving the entire travel experience for parents, caregivers, and even other travelers in line. Here’s why it matters:

  • Less Stress at Security: Families have more time and space to unpack strollers, diaper bags, and snacks without holding up the main line.

  • Shorter Waits for Everyone: Separating families into their own line can reduce overall congestion and delays in standard screening lanes.

  • PreCheck Perks: As part of this initiative, TSA is also offering a $15 discount per person on PreCheck applications, making faster screening more accessible for families.

Family Travel Tips for Using the TSA Family Lane

If you're heading to an airport offering the family security lane, here are a few tips to make your experience even smoother:

  • Look for “Family Lane” signs at TSA checkpoints—they're clearly marked and staffed.

  • Prepare your child ahead of time so they know what to expect in the security line.

  • Check your airport ahead of time—some terminals may not yet offer the lane, even if the airport is part of the program.

  • Consider TSA PreCheck—children under 12 can accompany a parent through the PreCheck line for free, and the new $15 discount helps with cost.

What Experts Are Saying

According to DHS officials, the purpose of the Families on the Fly program is to “mitigate the unique challenges families face when traveling and minimize stress while maintaining the highest level of security.” Trial runs in other countries have shown promising results, including reduced wait times by as much as 10–15% during peak hours and positive feedback from parents.

A Welcome Change for Family Travelers

Whether you’re traveling to visit grandparents, heading to a theme park, or taking a first family vacation abroad, the Families on the Fly program is a huge step forward in making air travel more accessible and manageable for families.

As TSA expands the program to more airports, be sure to check ahead and take advantage of this new, family-friendly option at security checkpoints. If you're flying through Charlotte, Orlando, or one of the airports on the upcoming list, you just might find your next airport experience a little more peaceful.
